The management and specialist team of SJSC "Latvijas autoceļu uzturētājs" participated in Winter Road Congress 2026 in Finland, where the latest solutions in winter road maintenance, digitalisation, and the use of sustainable materials were presented.
Data Integration and Digital Twin
Particular attention at the congress was devoted to the development of road weather monitoring technologies. Next-generation road weather stations are capable of processing data in real time, integrating with traffic flow data, and creating a digital road model for maintenance and traffic management purposes.
A road weather digital twin was also demonstrated, combining sensor data, radar measurements, satellite observations, and modelling algorithms. This enables the prediction of ice formation and the optimisation of response times.
More Sustainable Materials
Presentations highlighted new materials and approaches, including biodegradable anti-skid materials with lower environmental impact, the effectiveness of calcium chloride at lower temperatures, the use of formates to reduce corrosion risk and groundwater impact, as well as salt consumption optimisation through precise spreading combined with new materials.
Digitalisation and Work Monitoring
Special interest was drawn to Finnish solutions for GPS-based monitoring of equipment movement and operational parameters, documentation of completed work using geo-tagged photos, real-time data visualisation on digital maps, and the use of artificial intelligence for optimising equipment performance and early identification of risk signals.
Looking Ahead
Participation in the congress provided an opportunity to broaden professional perspectives and exchange experience with specialists from other countries.
Based on the insights gained, the company plans to implement at least one of the presented solutions within the operations of VAS “Latvijas autoceļu uzturētājs”, strengthening safety, efficiency, and sustainability in winter road maintenance across Latvia.
